My guest bedroom has the pleasure of serving double duty as my office and guest bedroom. Unfortunately, that also means space is at a premium. While I don't have many overnight guests at the moment (thanks covid) I can imagine a time when folks regularly use the guest bedroom so I want it to be comfortable.
I knew I wanted at least a queen sized bed so that I could host a couple in the same bed relatively Comfortably. I searched for weeks looking for the right solution. At first, I was dead set on a murphy bed, but it was ultimately prohibitively expensive just to get a frame, not even considering the mattress. I started looking at Ikea Pax units to see if I could hide a homemade murphy bed in them when I stumbled upon the perfect daybed: Ikea Hemnes Daybed.
It's a twin sized daybed that pulls out to be king sized. Small enough to not take up too much space when I don't have guests, but large enough to make sure they are comfortable when visiting. Talk about a win-win situation. I purchased the daybed from Ikea, but ended up using these Zinus Memory Foam Mattresses for something with a little more substance.
The Photos on the Ikea website show the expanded with the pillows set up so that one person is "trapped" on the inside of the daybed and another person is "free".
When setting this up for guests, I am planning to rotate the two mattresses perpendicular to how they are stored for the day bed so that each person gets a little big of headboard and no one is trapped.
Another bonus I forgot to mention is the three drawers of storage underneath! These are perfect for storing guest bedroom linens when not in use and can turn into clothing storage for guests when they come. Overall, I am in love with this solution for a space saving guest bedroom. Now I just need to have my first overnight guest!
